Help needed with date

How can i assign a variable by the name of CUTDATE= today date - 90 days? i have something like this right now :-

Code:
today=`date '+%Y%m%d'`
#cutdate = this is where i am having problem. i need today - 90 days

How can i accomplish this? After that i need to do delete the data which are more than 90 days old from a file xyz.log. My first problem is that variable cutdate. Any help will be really appreciated.

Thanks

This is a very frequent topic here. Does your date command support the syntax date -d "90 days ago"?

we are using Sun Solaris. So yes we do support -d. I tried searching on the forum but was not able to find one.

My other problem is that every year month is different. Meaning in 2009 April might have 30 days. How can we accomplish this?.

April has 30 days every year. The only tricky one is February. Anyway, if you don't want 90 days but 3 months ago, say that instead. Your date manual page will have plenty examples.

The "months ago" syntax is only available through the GNU version of date..much to my chagrin on my 2.8 Solaris box; boy it'd be swell if they'd let me install it. You'll want to try something of a perl one-liner... I'd listed one not too long ago..but don't have the link handy.
