I think i have figured it out...
Code:
nl list1.txt | awk '{print "no."$1  $2}' | sed -n '/no.2/p' | sed "s/no.2//g"

in this case, in the sed parts, the "no.2" would be $file =)
# 9

The ^ in the original sed script takes care of anchoring the substitution to the start of the line.

I guess what I should have used was sed -n 's/^ [1-9][0-9]* //gp' (where probably the last character before the double slash should be a tab, depending somewhat on your nl -- to type a literal tab, in many shells, you need to escape it like ctrl-v tab.)

For x in a b c; { list; } (in lieu of do list; done) works (in bash) - why and how?

In this post I came across the cited construct. It works! while ... { list; } does not. man bash does not mention it (or, better, I didn't see it). Any reason for / behind this? Am I missing something? (5 Replies)

Bash script - stripping away characters that can't be used in filenames

I want to create a temp file which is named based on a search string. The search string may contain spaces or characters that aren't supposed to be used in filenames so I want to strip those out.
