how can I get a line from a file?

how can I get line number 3(for example) from a file ?

you can use sed command. ex: filename is 12345L:

# cat 12345
1 line1
2 line2
3 line3
4 line4
5 line5

# sed -n '3p' 12345
3 line3
# 3

if i want the 3rd line , for example ...

cat filename | head -3 | tail -1

no need to cat filename, just a suggestion:

# head -3 filename | tail -1
