100% beginner trying to install
Hello,

I'm sorry but I must state from the start that I know absolutely nothing about UNIX.

I am trying to install a program on my computer which I apparently must use the Terminal application to do. I am on a Powerbook G4, Mac OS 10.3.9 and have never used the Terminal before yesterday. I have read the README and INSTALL files and been searching on the internet on different forums and sites about UNIX but all the information I have found is in a language too technical for me to understand. So far, I have managed to cd (a term I just learned) to the directory the program is in, but when I try typing " ./configure" as the INSTALL seemed to indicate I should I get the message: "configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH"

This seems to be a common problem because I found posts on this forum and others but I don't understand how to solve it. Could you please explain in a very simple "dummie" language what exactly I should do? If you need more information about my computer or the program I am trying to install please just ask me.

Thanks in advance for your time.

PS: obviously, like most UNIX beginners I have read on different forums, I am afraid of doing something stupid which will mess up my computer or lose my files so I don't dare play around too much and try and figure it out by myself.

       install-solaris - install the Solaris operating system

SYNOPSIS

       install-solaris

       install-solaris	invokes  the  Solaris  Install	program. Depending on graphical capability and available memory at the time of invocation,
       install-solaris invokes either a text-based installer or a graphical installer.

       The following minimum requirements for physical memory dictate which features are available during installation:

       For SPARC machines:

       128 MB

	   Minimum physical memory for all installation types

       128 MB

	   Minimum physical memory required for windowing system

       384 MB

	   Minimum physical memory required for graphical-based installation

       For x86 machines:

       256 MB

	   Minimum physical memory for all installation types

       256 MB

	   Minimum physical memory required for windowing system

       512 MB

	   Minimum physical memory required for graphical-based installation

       In some cases, even if the minimum physical memory is present, available virtual memory after system startup can limit the number  of  fea-
       tures available.

       install-solaris	exists	only  on  the Solaris installation media (CD or DVD) and should be invoked only from there. Refer to the  for more
       details.

       install-solaris allows installation of the operating system onto any standalone system. install-solaris loads the software available on the
       installation media. Refer to the  for disk space requirements.
