Hi Era,

That was amazing. Using the OD command i did get the octal character the value was \222 and it worked just fine. And yes the problem faced in vi was also the same as that you had predicted, the peple trying to help were unable to help as i had not identified the character code for the char ^Ò correctly.

No problem.

Try grep '[ -~]' unixfile to see if there are other weird characters in it. You might want to add tab and maybe a couple more to the permitted characters.
