grep on file of small size
Hi everybody,
I would like to carry out a grep on files below a certain size.
First I thought to find the files with "find" and then pipe the result to grep.

e.g.

find /my_dir  -size -20  -print | grep hello

but in this way grep searches only the string hello in the file names.

Is there a way to pass to grep the file names found with "find"?

also consider including this option in your find command: -type f

I have some files names which are not unix standard so grep crashes and it seems to stop after a certain number of errors.

Is there a way to ignore errors? I tried the options -s but it didn't work.

Try this:

find /my_dir -size -20 -type f -exec grep hello "{}"\;

Find doesn't quite after a certain number of errors but this should prevent odd filenames from giving so much trouble.

put a space between "{}" and \;

Directory size larger than file system size?

Hi, We currently have an Oracle database running and it is creating lots of processes in the /proc directory that are 1000M in size. The size of the /proc directory is now reading 26T. small question of echo | grep command

Hi, i've got the following: a=`echo $b | grep '^.*/'` i'm storing in the variable the value of the variable b only if it has a / somewhere. It works, but i don't want to print the value. How do i give the value of b to the grep command without the echo? thanks! (5 Replies)
