Help with awk
Hello,

I have the following in a texfile:

Lobby Furniture:1201 Plumbing Supplies:1423
> Ballroom Specialities:1221 Office Equipment:1361
> Poolside Carts:1320 Carpeting Services:1395
> Formal Dining Specials:1340 Auto Maintenance:1544
> Reservation Logs:1410 Pianos and Violins:1416

Each field contains a ":" and is seperated by 2-3 spaces.

Instead of the spaces I want to separate the fields with a -.

I tried awk -F" " '{printf"%-s'-'%s\n",$1,$2}' question17 and got:

Lobby Furniture:1201 Plumbing Supplies:1423-
Ballroom Specialities:1221 Office Equipment:1361-
Poolside Carts:1320 Carpeting Services:1395-
Formal Dining Specials:1340 Auto Maintenance:1544-
Reservation Logs:1410 Pianos and Violins:1416-

Why is awk putting the dash at the end of the line? And how can I get it to be where I want it to be? An explanation as well as anser would be appreciated.

I solved my own problem using:

awk -F"\t" '{printf"%-s'-'%s\n",$1,$2}' question17
