doubt in tr command

Hi,
I am trying to understand a script and found a line as follows:

tr '\211\233\240' '\040' < $IN_FILE | tr -cd '\11\12\15\40-\176' > $TEMP_FILE

Can any one explain the above line .. What are they trying to translate using the tr command.. I have not used tr command.. so feeling little bit hard to understand..

The first tr changes the octal character values \nnn in the first string to octal \040 = space character. \nnn is a way of writing non-printing characters.

The second tr on the other side of the pipe deletes all characters in the stream that are not in the '\11...' string all of this is written to a file specified by the TEMPFILE varaible.

Hi Jim

The explanation for the first tr is clear. But in the second tr "tr -cd '\11\12\15\40-\176' " , you have mentioned that it will delete the occurances of 11 , 12 .. But what does that that -\176 mens ??
I guess \11 , \12 are again octal form of representation .. Is that right ??
