Question my first script ?

Hello,
I need help writing a script that will use the touch -t in
[CC]ddmmyyyy HH:mm format.

Basically I have to go into a directory and give all of the files their original time stamp, hence the touch -t command. But where to start ?

I was planning on using this:

touch -t
pwd (as this would be my current working dir)
would I set it up as a if then else fi construct ?

what is the best way to come up with something like this ?

thanks so much

This type of change is a for loop command. Something like the following - haven't tried this at all....

for each_file in /your_dir/*
do
touch -t [[CC]YY]MMDDhhmm[.SS] $each_file
done

Note from man page the date format that is required for touch -t.

homework???

Simon,

I must check to see if this is homework. Per the site rules homework is strictly forbiddden. However, if you are only asking for advice and not a free script, some people, like me and Peter, may offer help to you.

This looks an awful lot like a homework assignment to me though.

In the future, if you need help, please make it more "work related" questions instead of "homework related".

Peter's advice is right on, that script will do the trick, but I like to capture the error messages as well.

On the same line as the "done" put this: 2> /path/to/my/error.log

This will capture any errror messages that you may receive.
