UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I have searched and found a few threads that have dealt with this, but the examples I've tried haven't seemed to help.

I am monitoring our database log for high checkpoints.
I can parse out the checkpoint value which can be anywhere from zero into a 3 digit number.

I set a variable to be the value of my threshhold to send an email that we had a high checkpoint.

My analysis script statement looks like this with THRESHHOLD being equal to 5, THRESHHOLD2 = 05 AND THRESHHOLD3 =005.
I tried typeset -i on kky6 and the threshhold values, but its not recognizing that a value of 403 in kky6 is greater than 5.
I am on solaris 9 and using ksh.

Why not perform the comparisons as numeric?

THOLD=5
KKY6=403

if [ $KKY6 -gt $THOLD ]
then
echo $KKY6 "threshold exceeded"
fi

if [ $KKY6 -eq $THOLD ]
then
echo $KKY6 "threshold equaled"
fi

if [ $KKY6 -lt $THOLD ]
then
echo $KKY6 "threshold not yet reached"
fi

if [ $kky -eq 403 ] ; then
> is doing a simple string compare "5" is greater than "403"

numeric compare operators: -eq -gt -ne -lt

Some really old shells had a very low limit on the numeric value of a variable, above that limit numbers operations did not work.

I thought I had tried using -lt and -gt but I just put it in and it worked.
