configure floppy disk?

what are your next steps when you see:

# mount /dev/fd0 /mnt
mount: /dev/fd0 : Device not configured

- please?

NO filesystem maybe?
Needs formatting? creating a FS on it...to be able to mount it

oh, dear!

as any other cledulous creature I just faithfully followed instructions from the Holy Handbook to get what I've got.

What now?
I'm a greenhorn and any talk of file systems fills me with awe and makes me hang up for half a day.
