I can make your co-worker's solution fail your requirements with a data line that has too few or too many exclamations. My posted solution works based on your requirements.

If you are confident of the consistency of your input, then your co-worker's solution is a good one.

Seems to me that this is just as good a solution as any...

A solution that makes all the delimiters the same is making an assumption about how many delimiters there will be, and the original posting stated "It is not fixed format".

I like the new solution (clever), but it does not meet the requirements as I understand them, so I have to disagree that it is just as good a solution as any.

My solution picks out the word following the first slash. In the following two lines, I would extract Deal30 from each, where the new solution would not.

369!pcust-ap03!f0gaudf5/Deal30/test
369!pcust-ap03!f0gaudf5!andmore/Deal30/test

I didn't mean to offend anyone.

The lower nodes in the data do vary and the length of the higher nodes can vary. But the nodes I care about will always be the second, third, and forth. But thanks for all of the suggestions. I really enjoyed playing around with perl again as it has been several years since I worked with it. Gill

Thanks for that clarification. Good post - I enjoyed batting it around. Smilie
