UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hello,
I try to copy a small file e.g. /etc/hosts from my workstation to my office Pc via serial cable on Port b. (/dev/term/b)
But I don´t now how!

On the Pc I can only use the HyperTerm on NT because this is the released software. There is an option to send or receive data but i have no idea how can I send the data from the Workstation.
Is there anybody with experience in this kind of Solaris and NT interworking ?

If you can get to the SUN system (login) via hyperterminal on the PC, then you can cat the /etc/hosts file and copy/paste it to another application (notepad) on the p.c.

I think my problem description was a little bit to confuse.
With copy and past is it no Problem with small text files.
But for me it is important to copy tar or binary files on this way from my workstation to the pc.
At my company the save restriction are very heigh, so I have only the way of burning a CD at the UNIX part of the net and then copy this on the NT-PC.
You can see that is not one of the shortest ways to copy files.
The null modem cable is my only way.

I hope this helps to understand my request.

Are these two systems on a network? Or are they both stand-alone systems with no connection to a network?

What are the versions of OS?

Some suggestions although I'm not quite sure why you want to go through a serial cable between these systems - if your company's policy is not to do these things, then follow the policy.


If the systems are connected to a network - try sending the files you need to send via email. There are other posted messages about attaching binary files to emails if you search the forum.

If you are trying to backup some important data - have the company buy a tape drive if the systems are stand-alone.

Post back with what exactly you are trying to accomplish.

First of all these two Computers are on different networks.
The Nt PC is connected to a network and to the internet.
The workstation is on a separted UNIX network without the posibility to send e-mails. On the UNIX (SunOS wokstaion0 5.5.1 Generic_103640-32 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-5_10) network i am the administrator. The admin of the NT-Network is not so cooperate. The UNIX network is one of our test beds and some times it is very helpful to send information about scripts hardware snoop´s e.t.c. .
There is no problem to save the information on tape or on an other device, but that's far too much trouble for me !

I think there is practicable way of send files to the PC with the help of the HyperTerm, because there is a option to receive data.

I thout about this situation a long time but for my there is no other way (serial cable). I agree with you that is not the road to success.

If telnet (with HyperTerminal) from the NT to UNIX is allowed,
My I suggest you work with the NT admin. to set up SSH (along
with SCP)? This will allow SECURE terminal access as well as file
transfer. Personally, I would disable Telnet at that point.

Sorry I can`t understand your answer.
With the hyperterm connection i am able to connect to my workstation via hardwired. But how can I connect with telnet from my workstaion to my pc or vice versa.
If I use telnet it is required to set a hostname(ip-address) [port].
