() helps you group patterns. \(^.\) is represented by \1. Similarly \(.*\) is represented by \2

You cannot use [] instead of ()

the command I found through googling.But I am not able to understand, how this command selects second field, and do "p" in the command represents paste?

In this , how did it elects second field?
I came to knw what do '1' and '2' do in this command?

sed -n 's/\(^.\)*,\(.*\)/\1\2"whatever you want to insert here"\3/p' filename.csv
this will elect the column between 2nd and 3rd.

sed -n 's/\(^.\)*,\(.*\)/\1\2\3"whatever you want to insert here"\4/p' filename.csv
this will elect the column between 3rd and 4th

wat if i want to change the 3rd field?? wat do i have to change in the syntax for that?
