Taking a name out of $PATH

so here is my path:

/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/Users/a:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin

how would I remove only the "a" or name string within it?

any help appreciated

Code:
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/Users:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin ; export PATH

or
Code:
setenv PATH /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/Users:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin

Or do you mean something else?

The above has done this... Or are you looking at scripting something to do it automatically?
If you are going to script it, how will you identify which elements in the path should be edited? ie out of "blah:cat:dog", which one needs to be changed?

scripted it may look a bit like this....
Code:
PATH=`echo $PATH | sed -e 's/\/a//g'` ; export PATH

or if you have a UserName
Code:
PATH=`echo $PATH | sed -e 's/\/UserName//g'` ; export PATH

That would result in the removal of any match of that string, in the above example, this would mean /usr/local/bin would become /usr/locl/bin Smilie
