UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hello All,
I am trying to get the average of a set of numbers using awk. I only want to average the numbers on the first row of the file then put the average on the end of that row and then on to the second row but i can only get it to do the average for the whole file.
Here is the code i am using:

awk ' { sum = $2 + $3 }
END { average = sum / 2
printf "%d\n", average
}' all

Data in 'all' is something like this
blah 5 10
doh 20 30

I have managed to do this in a previous post but it was using for loops and i want to do it without loops if possible?

Code:

awk '{print $0,($2 +$3)/2}' file

should work

I wasn't sure weather to post my next Q in a new post as I have searched the forum for a solution but couldn't find it. Basically i want the numnbers to be rounded off to the nearest whole number. I have found solutions using printf but obviusly i am using print. Also i could not get the bc function working with the above command. I also tried putting 'int' in to the code but still had no luck.
I also tried using printf on a seperate line but printf did not work when i was telling it to work on a certain field :S

Aha i have managed to do it.
All i did was put 'int' before the sum like i said i tried but i was missing extra brackets. I also had to put on +0.5 at the end. Does anybody know why you need to do this???

echo var$ | awk '{print $0,int((($3 + $4 + $5 + $6)/4)+0.5)}' all2 > collate
