Problem solved

System Shock, I appreciate what you are saying, but I see no reason why I cannot play around with both systems, Linux and Unix. Anyway I was used to Linux automatically detecting my connection and misunderstood what it was asking. Being self taught, I am better in some areas that I have more experience with than in other areas. I have 5 computers, and none of them are networked together.

Reborg saved me a lot of hassle with his observation. I did another install and checked "Networked" and the system did detect my connection.

And I thank everyone else for taking the time to help.

For future reference, sys-unconfig would have achieved the same result without the reinstall, but you live and learn Smilie

I would have to disagree with System Shock about sticking to Linux. Learning a "real" Unix system first is a great idea becasue you learn to work without GNU extensions to all the various core commands, and it makes your skillset much more portable and flexible.

Also if the "unknown" hostname ( assuming you are using dhcp ) bugs you, stick the name you want to use for the machine in /etc/nodename and it will pick it up on next reboot.

I read through this thread with great interest because I am having the same problem. When I got to Reborg's post about the network I thought I was home free. I also tried a reinstall because I remembered answering NO and wanted to now answer yes. However, I am not getting the question now, even though I have gone all the way back and started over with a new partition. What am I doing wrong?
