This is a complex question. It first requires a definition of unix. If you want the short answer, Linux is unix, and by all but one definition its true. Linux is unix in the same way that FreeBSD, and MacOSX are unix, it exhibits the behaviors and implements the "standards" of unix.

Keep in mind that the UNIX trademark is largely diluted. The fact that Solaris and Irix can use the UNIX trademark dosent make them any better or worse than Linux or MacOSX. ALL versions of unix differ significantly, whether they carry the trademark or not. There are two major divisions of unix, System V and BSD. SysV is an ATT's (the inventor of unix) version and BSD is from UC Berkely. Most commercial unix variants (Solaris, AIX, Irix, HP/UX, etc) are SysV at heart with some BSDisms. The BSD's (Free, Net, Open, MacOSX) are obviously BSD. Linux is a mix but leans toward BSD. Older versions of some commercial unixes are more BSD than SysV (SunOS 4.x, and Irix 4.x and below most prominently).

Elmo,
you cant difrrentiate between Unix and Linux. That why we encourage people to Check the FAQ Threads first or search the forum before post a question!. Linux is one of unix variant. It is not seperate from Unix. It doesnt need speacial PC for it to run the most important thing that you need is the H/Ware requirements Ex. RAM , Hard disk Etc. Check the vendors page for which version of Unix variant you wanted to use. Also pls check the FAQ Threads for more information.

Elmo,

UNIX is an architectural model and LINUX is one of many computer operating systems that follow the same design philosophy.

You want to drive a car... all UNIX variants are cars... the choice to drive depends on your application, personal likes, dislikes, etc.

No one can tell you which one is better, because one is not better than the other.... it depends on what you what to use it for, the organization (or lack of), the culture, an myriad other factors.

I suggest you should search the forums and read BEFORE asking questions... these are the rules, BTW. Your question has been asked and answered many times.
