-x at the top of scripts
I believe this is for debugging, and that every command the shell executes is written somewhere. But what is this somewhere? How do we find the file where this stuff was written to?

It goes to stderr.

One more question, can we send it to somewhere other than stderr?

Well we can send stderr anywhere. In my example I sent it to /dev/null.
