the ftp format is not correct

I guess when you ftp the saved file from unix to win,you use the BIN format, please set to ASSCI.
ftp>asc
200 Type set to A.
ftp>get

it's ok,good luck!

i did used ftp ascii, not working

and i also use L8 (i don't know what that is, can u tell me? ) apart from asc and bin. still not working.

i notice when i 'cat' the file, it's perfectly ok to view. but if i 'vi' it, it has strange characters.

The extra characters are for formatting. For plain text, try doing this:

man ls | col -b > manls.txt

You may also want to run unix2dos (also known as ux2dos, and other variants).
I believe it will simply add a ctrl+M at the end of each line, so you should be able to use sed if you don't have unix2dos installed.
man ls | col -b | sed 's/$/^M/g' > manls.txt

Of course, if you do use the ASCII option to ftp, as suggested above, you wouldn't really need unix2dos at all, since it's handled by the ftp client.

Hope this answers you questions.
