Thanks for your reply but the command failed with the error below :

Code:
$ sed -n '/ERROR/ { N; N; /./p }' 20071225.log
sed: Function /ERROR/ { N; N; /./p } cannot be parsed.

Also, I would like to specifiy the number of lines to print as an integer type parameter.

Thanks for your reply.
Your command is nearly perfect. It's returning everything except the line having the string "ERROR".

Code:
$ awk 'f&&f--; /ERROR/{f=2} ' 20071225.log
5678
8423
3456
3214

put a "print" statement inside the { } brackets

That worked for me I assumed sed would behave the same.

Does this work:

sed -n "/ERROR/,+2p" foo

If not, you may be better off with awk or perl. Or you could build your own copy of GNU grep.
