to get a line above the search word

Hi Everyone.

I want to get all the lines above the word error. Note some records dont have error.
ex

Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0735845
Error: (W)Submit Date before Fill Date(SUBMIT-DATE)

I want to have the line which starts with "Input". I dont want the error message.

There are millions of records and some records has error so i dont want the message but the record. how to do that.
if i grep -i error abc.txt
i get the line with error.

do grep -iv error then you won't get the line error, only lines that don't have error in them.

thanx for the quick reply.

dude!

there are lines without any error too. If i do that then i will have records with error and without any error merged together. My goal is to catch record id of those errorneous records.

Well... you'll have to be more specific than that.
Just a hint on how to help US to help YOU:
  1. provide a sample of data file that you're trying to search through - use vB Code tags when quoting data samples
  2. describe what you're searching FOR
  3. provide the command you're using

Pardon me for lurking. :-)
I tried vgersh99's elegant one-liner and it worked beautifully for me.

I made a file called test.txt with this content:

Code:
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0735845----1
Error: (W)Submit Date before Fill Date(SUBMIT-DATE)
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0735845
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0735845
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0999999----2
Error: (W)Submit Date before Fill Date(SUBMIT-DATE)
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0735845
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0735845
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0735845
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0735845
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0735845
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 8888888----3
Error: (W)Submit Date before Fill Date(SUBMIT-DATE)
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0735845
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0735845

Ran vgersh99 command like this:
Code:
sed -n '/[Ee]rror/{g;1!p;};h' test.txt

and got this result:
Code:
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0735845----1
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 0999999----2
Input Rec # 2384 Client: BGA Rx No: 8888888----3
