UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I had asked my system admin to
Disable direct login for xxxx id since it was a generic ID.
If someone wanted to login to xxxx id on same system, they should initially login with their yyyy id(personal ID) and then su to xxxx userid.(wanted to track who had all logged in, it would be diffult if
everyone used to login in generic id

Now,the person in charge has locked direct access(which I needed) and also locked access through other ID's (I have sudo access, I am able to login but want the same with other non sudo ID too

Please let me know how to revert back to eariler (since its a weekend, all sys admin have allready left home)

How are you currently accessing the system?

What are you sudo'ing from?

Did you make clear your requirements?

Did you understand the implications of the changes they said they would make?

Who owns/manages/is responsible for the server?

What user accounts are you permitted to use?

i am logging in to the system using my id zzzz and it has sudo acccess.

So what i am doing is

Code:

sudo su
su xxxx

and this lets me in

if I just do

Code:

su xxxx

auth fails

If you do not own/manage or are responsible for the server then use the access you have as you have it and let the admins fix it.

If you are responsible then you still have not told me how you login, (ssh, telnet, rlogin, xdm, gdm, kdm ) or even what type of system.

Results of "uname -a" would help.

I have sudo access and so I can be root

I am responsible for the box

So can you still login or not? Because you say the admins have locked login access?

if you can become root then you can become any user.

so

sudo su -
(you are now root)
su - userid
(you are now userid)
CTRL-d
(you are now root)
su - otheruserid
(you are now otheruserid)

if you get errors when "becoming" another user check /etc/passwd and make sure that a valid shell is set for that user
