hmmm - suspicion is creeping up .....

have you checked with ls -la? Unless you are root "ls -l" will not show you all the files with names starting with a dot ("."). Usually all these files are indeed in your home directory. If they are not there just create them. To get to your homedirectory from whereever you are enter "cd" without any parameter.
