How do I go about finding the number of unique words in a file.

You need to

change all characters to the same case
isolate each word, stripping out non-alphabetic characters would help
print out each word on it's own line
sort all the lines
remove the duplicates (they should be adjacent after the sorting)
count the remaining lines

In what language?

Given your current knowledge, how do you think any of those things could be done?

For instance....

sort - "man sort"

counting - "man wc"

Would you think those things would help or hinder?

Are GNOME or javadsktop supported of the box on Solaris 10 on Ultra (SUNBlade 1500) ? I'could switch desktops to KDE at CDE logon.
