UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

What am I doing wrong? I was searching for the answer to assigning variables from output. I found this simple response

this should allow me to echo the variables

however when I do this check that variables are correctly assigned output is this:

which is very different from what I expect.. why are the variables not assigned?

I am using SUSE 10.2.

now with them two bits of info I should be able to sort the rest of this.
