setting up web server on Red hat 7.2

hi I was successful in installing redhat 7.2 with no problems or error =) (first try) and It took me about 40 minutes to install it on a p233 mmx. It's running Gnome. I have some issues which I'm unsure of how to deal with.

1.How do I install an apache server, or is there one simular that already comes with it?

2. I was attempting to install unace, winace for linux but I have no clue! on how to do it I double click on it and it says It cannot find a progam to read it.

3. Last but the most important, how do I set up the ftp so I can connect from my windows pc, so I can upload files and chomd dirs.

If anyone could help me I would love it!. Thanks Smilie

Not sure about #2, you should be able to install apache
from the cdrom by using the rpm command:

rpm -Uhv /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/<apache filename>.rpm

assuming that you can access your CDROM in Linux as
/mnt/cdrom/.... and <apache filename> is the filename on
the CD you have.

Also see here:

http://www.redhat.com/apps/support/resources/
http://www.redhat.com/support/resour...tp/apache.html
http://www.redhat.com/support/resources/networking/

Finally, the ftp service should already be installed on your
Linux box. Have you tried ftp'ing something from the pc. I am
assuming that you windows pc has an ftp client. Here is some
redhat specific ftp info:

Best Wishes!

No,

x1-00-80-c8-75-f7-a3 - seems like to be your Adapter Address. Neway during your installation did you select the KDE or Gnome to be start as your default Desktop Environment ?

I picked Gnome... was that a wise choice?

installing apache

I kinda figures it out, I moved the files to /usr/local/apache/ then in the terminal I type cd /usr/local/apache, the ./configure --prefix=PREFIX, then make, make install but when I get to the last step with PREFIX/apache.conf it says I don't have the right file File Permission. I did this under too too and I'm confused.

Sorry so asking a dumb question I've only had redhat for 2 days now

It doesn't matter where the files are, I usually compile in my home directory (in a temporary folder) first, then when you run "make install", it'll put everything where you want it. If you compile in the directory where it will be installed, you'll have a bunch of junk laying around there... It just kind of sloppy.

The PREFIX should be changed by you. If you want to go ahead and put apache in /usr/local/apache, then the sequence would be:
(assuming that you're a regular user wile compiling... probably a good idea)

cd /home/livinfree/tmp-compile/ (I put unpacked the files here to compile)
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache
make
su (switch to root user, enter password)
make install

That is a very simplified way of doing it.
