Question Which motherboard???

Hello All

I'm looking to buy a new motherboard because my current one (ABIT BE6-II v1.1) doesn't support the installation of Unix. I'd like to keep my CPU (Genuine Intel PIII 800 Mhz) and memory (512 Meg) to use on the new motherboard.

My CPU is one of those cartridge types which is mounted perpindicular to the motherboard. So, I guess that eliminates quite a few manufacturers already.

Perhaps one of you have used / are using an newer ABIT motherboard, and can comment on your satisfation of it??

OR

Junk the PIII and go with a new board and chip????

Looking for suggestions please...

Thx

Hmmm ....

ok, you have a Slot-1 (CPU) motherboard. I believe that your
motherboard may be just fine. Where did you read that
your current motherboard does not support Unix ?

Now, what flavor of unix are you trying to install ?

The problem with my board is the HPT366 Ultra ATA/66 chip that isn't / wasn't recognized by SCO Unix OpenServer 5. Since I posted my original message, I've seen some other posts that talk about some patches that have been released, but it doesn't look like it's resolved the problem yet.

If my board isn't the problem anymore where newer versions of unix is concerned, and given that they've solved the HPT366 issues, which flavor of unix would be best for my system?

Thx for your input, I very much appreciate it.

1. If you have never used Unix before I would recommend Redhat.

2. Worst case, you can buy a cheap promise PCI ATA card for about $35 - 50 and disable your on-board ATA chip.

3. It may be difficult to find a slot-1 motherboard.

But I am sure you should be able to install Linux with what you
have.

Best Wishes!

I recommend ASUS motherboards.

If you are looking for a cheap Slot-A MB, ASUS made some great boards and you can find them on eBay, new and used. The K7V is one such example:

These are good (older) boards for the money and you can't lose with AMD Slot A processors for cost, peed and reliability. However, the ASUS K7V uses low density memory and will not work with high density memory. This memory is getting harder and harder to find. So a more ASUS modern board would be my suggestion.

Of course, there are lots of other great boards... however, my personal perference is to use ASUS.

Here is a link to Slot A processors on eBay:

BTW: Just noticed that you want to use your Intel PIII CPU. If you want to stay with your slot 1 processor, ASUS made great boards for these CPUs as well.
