Device Timeouts on Unix Server

Hi I am brand new to the forum
I have very limited understanding of unix, but am very computer literate. At work we have a unix server which has been the bane of our lives. We have stopped being able to access the network drives and the screen has lots of device timeouts. I have learned how to do an fsck command and halt and restart the system so it shutsdown and restarts properly but the timeouts remain. Is there anyway of finding out what exactly is timing out and how to fix it?

All help is appreciated

What operating system, platform, hardware, etc.

Please post examples of the error messages as there are many types of devices.

If the errors are SCSI timeouts I suggest you

(a) make sure you have a backup of everything

(b) stop the machine, power down

(c) blow out all dust etc

(d) reseat the SCSI cables

(e) check the number of devices on the chain and the termination

(f) Consider replacing the drives if they are on their way out.
