Hmmm Smilie
This is faster Smilie

zsh:

Code:
set *;echo ${${(n)@}[-1]}(:r)

this one shorter:

zsh:

Code:
echo ${${(n)$(ls)}[-1]}(:r)

or

Code:
echo ${"$(ls|sort -rn)"%%.*}

But those will fail in too many cases ... Smilie

With other shells if you like slow solutions:

Code:
v=$(ls|sort -rn) echo ${v%%.*}

Here's another way to do it! Smilie

Quote:
lakris@ubuntu:~/projekt/scripts/numberfiles$ ls
1234.txt 234.txt 345.txt 456.txt 586.txt 678.txt
lakris@ubuntu:~/projekt/scripts/numberfiles$ basename $(ls|sort -n|tail -1) .txt
1234
/Lakris
