guys can anyone tel me how to insert a line in a file(bash) using line number
i wanna insert the line using LINE NUMBER...i know for inserting above or below a perticular line we can use sed a\ or i\....

One way is to use ed. Man ed for more information.

sed '1 i added by rakesh' hello.c
sed '1 a added by rakesh' hello.c


i is used to insert 'added by rakesh` at line number 1 in hello.c
a is used to inset 'added by rakesh' after line number 1 in hello.c

I would recommend is to see the man pages of sed, it deserves to be visited
and do see info also, it contains good examples which would give a better perspective over editors like sed, ed, vi etc

i am sorry, i misinterpreted the question,
using sed is much better than using ed

simple example of how to insert "hai" at line 20 in hello.c

create file named input_for_ed write these line
20
i
hai
.
w
q

sed: 0602-404 Function 1 i create control cannot be parsed.

I think u are using older version of sed
