Where to start!

Hi guys, i have been transferred to a new department and given the role as
a unix admin/reports . I basically monitor the error logs and disk space, very basic. I am reallly interested in unix and want to get stuck into it, but where do you start. We use aix here and i hear its well paid if you become an administrator.

Can anyone tell me what i need to learn to get to aix standard, i am currently doing unix essentials.Smilie

Maybe you could start here - reading the forum rules?

Well I would say you've made an excellent start by getting into this forum. Keep posting, reading posts and googling/searching/testing for solutions to problems that others post.

You learn and discover all sorts of things as you simply work with UNIX. Reading the books will get you started with basics to find your way around but nothing beats doing the actual work and gaining experience. Even if you don't solve certain problems, you'll have learnt or refreshed your memory on all sorts of other things while trying.

When you find yourself doing repetative things, think to yourself, is there any way I can automate this? Start by breaking a problem down into little problems, (Occam's Razor) and see if you can start building a library of scripts that simplify your day to day job.
