UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi

Can anyone tell me if it is at all possible to edit ones .bash_profile, to make the setting on of line numbers (in vi/vim), permanent?

I've been to a few IRC channels and people keep telling me it is more of a vi/vim thing and to use something called ".vimrc", however I heard that it is actually possible to do it through editing the .bash_profile.

Am I on a wild goose chase for red herrings or is it doable?

write this in your .vimrc file:

If this file does not exist in your home directory, create it.

Hi...

Open a file called .exrc ie
vi .exrc

add this line in your file

se nu or set number
you can add some more like

set showmode
set ic

and many more options are there which u can include to customize your vi.
