volume group auto activation

AIX - 4.3

background:
2 E30s connected to a disk tower, shared volume group stored on the disk tower. only one machine has the volume group locked at any one time . . .

situation:
i need to set auto activation to 'no' for the volume group on both machines, but I can not just transfer control (vary on) the shared volume group as I wish, it is a fairly huge ordeal.

question:
is there a way to alter a characteristic of a volume group without that said volume group being varied on?

I realize there is more than likely not a way to do this, but I was hoping maybe someone knew of some magic that I have not found.

scratch this question, I figured it out . . .

FYI - to all you can run a chvg -a n vgname against a vg that is varied off. the activation flag seems to be the only flag you can use against a varied off vg. which makes sense - the change is made is to the ODM of the machine vs the chars of the vg itself.
