Hi,

is it possible to check to see if I can connect to a particular port on another machine?

Yes. Typically you

(a) try and use the application you intend to use and that knows the protocol for that port

or

(b) use "telnet <hostname> <port>" to confirm connectivity.

Most of the cases this might not be possible as, telnet-d might not have been enabled due to security reasons where login is permitted only through ssh-d

I am not referring to using telnetd, I am refering to the client telnet program to test for any specific active listening port.
