Issue with installing GCC on Darwin - Trying not to freak out
The learning curve with UNIX is a bit steep and devastatingly humbling.
Anywho, I need GCC so that I can install the software that I actually need and am terribly stuck. When I attempt to configure gcc I get the following error:

configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.
Interestingly (or not) I got the same error trying to install openBabel, which is why I started trying to install GCC in the first place.
What this says to me is "GCC can not be configured because GCC is not configured."
I've searched around for an answer, and have verified that I am entering the config command appropriately but generally find instructions that simply state: "hopefully you won't get any error" or "assuming that worked, move on to the next step (build)" Well, I did get an error, it didn't work, and I'm completely lost.

I am trying to install gcc on SPARC 5.9
pkgadd -d gcc-3.4.2-sol9-sparc-local
i get the below error

I want to install gcc for Solaris 10 to an alternate location besides /usr/local/bin, so I can't use the pre-compiled package from sunfreeware.com.
So I assume I need to compile gcc for myself and specify --prefix.
How can I accomplish this? Am I pretty much out of luck trying to compile... (3 Replies)
I have a platform whose base is Linux but not everything is available on that. Only necessary executables are available and any individual executable can run on that. It is 32-bit and uname -a shows Linux 2.6.11.11.

AIM- Install Oracle 11g on Solaris using VMWare
Steps
1.Logged on as root
2.Created subfolders à /usr/local/bin & /usr/local/bin/gcc
3.Downloaded gcc & libiconv & unzipped them on my harddrive & burnt them on CD
4.Copied files from CD to /usr/local/bin/gcc
