Spin,
There are several ways you can loop thru files, here is one of them:
Code:
for mFile in BeginFile*
do
  echo "mFile = "$mFile
  ... <place your code here> ...
done

Hi: this is the script I was working with: any tips? When I run the script, I don't get any error messages; it appears to run, but it hangs.
Simon

#!/bin/sh
# Author Script
for file in *
do awk 'BEGIN{FS":"}
/Author/ {print $3 } '
"$file" >> ~/Documents/Dissertation/Content*Analysis/Database/Author.txt
done

Spindoctor,
Try displaying the variable "file" inside of the loop:
Code:
for file in *
do
echo 'Now working with file = <"$file">"
...

Does that apostrophe need to be closed?

I am sorry, Spindoctor -- my mistake.
Please, replace the single quote with double quote.
Thanks for noticing it:
Code:
for file in *
do
echo "Now working with file = <"$file">"
...

OK, now it's echoing the first file name in the directory, which is good. But it's still hanging. These are short files...could this for some reason take a really long time? Or is the loop getting hung up?

Spindoctor,
See if this works for you:
Code:
for mFile in *
do
echo "Now working with file = <"$mFile">"
  egrep 'Author' $mFile | sed "s/.*: \(.*\)\\\/\1/"
done
