Help! a free Sprite is involved!

Can anyone define the following for me?

/etc/rc.c/init.d/iptables restart

Our resident "Geek" is giving away a prize if I can tell him what this means.

Not gonna blow it

Well, I assume he means :
/etc/rc.d/init.d/iptables restart
(rc.d, not rc.c)

That's your first hint...

Try reading the file ( second hint ).

You owe me (half of) a Sprite...

Hi LivinFree,
I tried on both a HP system and a Solaris one, but I could not find either rc.d nor rc.d in my /etc

May I know what you have been talking about ?

Smilie

[well I do not want Sprite!!]

sskb,
iptables is a Linux kernel 2.4 and above firewalling system. To the best of my knowledge, it is not founf on any other system, since it is kernel dependent.

And I know that most, if not all, Linux systems keep their startup config in /etc/rc.d (whether they use SysV config or BSD scripts).

The startup scripts he is using is similar to what's in /sbin/init.d/ and /sbin/rc(#).d/ on an HP-UX system, although I don't know where they are on a Solaris system...

Smilie Thank You LivinFree I got that.
and while going through that I found that it has to be run on the 'root' mode. Is there a possiblity to have it done with a normal user mode, since I am not the 'root' user.

ThanksSmilie

Well, if you aren't the root user, I wouldn't recommend starting / restarting / stopping any services... In this case, the file in questions is a script, so you may still be able to view it... It may at least give you some insight into what it's doing.
