How to do this UNIX script?

Hi,

I have a requirement in which I have to split the xml files in to 50K bytes and append some default lines ( I am writing this in a new file, let me say this as file1) at the end of each of the files , except the last file where I have to append some other lines (i am writing this in to some other file) and combine all the files together to form a single file.

Actually when I split the files in to multiple files based on the size, using SPLIT command, the file gets splitted with the last line incomplete, and thats not a problem here, when I append the file1 , to the end of the splitted file, this new file is not written as the last line, but contining at the last line like this:

tail -1 split1file
<abcdebash-2.03$

so, after the cat file1 >> split1file, it is like this:

<abcde<file_append>
<Header>
<Header1>

Please help me solving this.

Thanks in advance!

Give a try on this

split -b20k temp_file temp_file_split_
for i in $(ls temp_file_split_* | sed '$d')
do
echo "Your data" >>$i
done

echo "Diff data" >>$(ls temp_file_split_* | tail -1)

hi jacoden,

Thanks for ur reply.the script works well, except for this problem:

The last line of my file is like this:

<abcdebash-2.03$ where <abcde is the data and bash is the bourne shell prompt.

Now, the script appends the data on the same line and I want that to be in the next line, like this:

<abcde
data line1
data line2
etc.,

Please help.

I think the below one will make the "data" in a newline and insert one more newline at the end

split -b20k temp_file temp_file_split_
for i in $(ls temp_file_split_* | sed '$d')
do
echo -e "\nYour data\n" >>$i
done

echo -e "\nDiff data\n" >>$(ls temp_file_split_* | tail -1)

Try something like below...Note that I havn't tested this...

split -b20k temp_file temp_file_split_
for i in $(ls temp_file_split_* | sed '$d')
do
#########Add something like this#############
if [ "$i" != "$(ls temp_file_split_* | head -1)" ]
then
echo -e "Extra data\n $(cat $i)" >$i
fi
#####################################
echo -e "\nYour data\n" >>$i
done

echo -e "\nDiff data\n" >>$(ls temp_file_split_* | tail -1)
