Hammer & Screwdriver What about this approach?

Code:
> infile=US_SALES_08_2008_I.csv
> echo $infile
US_SALES_08_2008_I.csv
> echo $infile | tr "_" "\n" | tail -1
I.csv

> infile=US_SALES_08_2008_IJKLM.csv
> echo $infile
US_SALES_08_2008_IJKLM.csv
> echo $infile | tr "_" "\n" | tail -1
IJKLM.csv

or, if just looking for the part before the '.'
Code:
> infile=US_SALES_08_2008_I.csv
> echo $infile | tr "_" "\n" | tail -1 | cut -d"." -f1
I
> infile=US_SALES_08_2008_IJKLM.csv
> echo $infile | tr "_" "\n" | tail -1 | cut -d"." -f1
IJKLM
