Sorry about the misinformation on GRUB, I should have checked what it stood for before posting.

We installed Fedora Linux, even though it has a GUI interface I was interested in the command line, shell scripting and ViM editor of Linux since they help in gaining practice with Unix which is used by many corporations.

On the surface the text based commands on Linux looked very similar if not identical to those on Unix.

UNIX is more of a conceptual plan than an operating system; a set of white papers describing a standard operating system. A datacenter might have computers running Solaris, HP-UX, BSD, etc. but there's no commercial OS that just calls itself "UNIX". The BSD's are actually probably the closest to "pure" UNIX, having originated it, but there are lots of OSes built to this plan. Linux and the GNU tools are fairly close -- the places where it differs most is in that it actually goes farther, standard commands supporting more options than the POSIX ones, the kernel having more functionality than the minimum, and so forth.
