HOSTS File
Hi All,

I am to the UNIX world and want to know if I can specify a range of IP addresses instead of having to include one by one on the HOSTS file.

Can I just say

127.20.1.1 to 127.20.1.156 ?

Or the only way is to put one by one along with the machine name next to the IP ?

Befre I answer anything , Tell me why do you need a hosts file. The answer is very much there in that.

Hosts files are text files in a Unix network that provides name resolution of host names to IP addresses. They contain a host name and corresponding IP address on each line. That is all I know about HOSTS file.

So you want to specify a range of IP addresses to one host?

OK. I got the idea.

But for my particular situation, Informix database running on UNIX.
What really matters in our HOSTS file are the IP Addresses. The name we put next to the IP could be anything. The point is to have the IP address of the PC's that have access to the application. What I am trying to say is, if the IP address is in the HOSTS file, doesn't matter the name I put next to that IP. This is the reason I came up with the question. Also, because I am NEW to UNIX. Anyway, thanks for the quick answers, now I know that each IP should be specified and a range is not possible. Although would be excellent for me to have that.

hi all just installed the netsec.options.tcpwrapper from expansion pack, which used to be a rpm, for my aix 6.1 test box. it is so unpredictable. i set up the hosts.deny as suggested for all and allow the sshd for specific ip addresses/hostnames. the tcpdchk says the hosts allowed and...
