For Loop

Write a simple for loop that processes each file in the present working directory (PWD) and outputs the filename and number of characters in that file. Hint, you will use the cat and wc commands.

Run this simple script from your home directory. At a minimum, your output should look something like:

filea 375
fileb 28
. . .
or
filea contains 375 characters
fileb contains 28 characters
. . .

..this is what I have...
#!bin/bash
for i in $(pwd)
do
find -type f >> files

cat files
done

I can't figured out how to get the character count from each indivual file in the loop I know the command to read each character is wc -m, but I don't know how to incorporate it. Thanks for any helps!!!

Not supposed to post homework requests but since you've done some work I'll give some advice Smilie

try adding a pipe in there...
maybe the "xargs -a" command to read the list of files.

If all else fails, try google. I found a few posts out there that bare an almost uncanny resemblance to yours Smilie

You might also try asking your teacher to give you an assignment that actually teaches you something useful. I'm still waiting for that moment in my life where remembering the formula to solve Quadratic equations is going to help me out that the teacher insisted I memorized Smilie

FILENAME=$( find -type f )
CHARS=$( wc -m $FILENAME )
echo "$FILENAME $CHARS"

put that in the do and it worked

  1. this doesn't work - at least not on Solaris.
  2. 'find' will recursively walk the tree whereas you need JUST the current directory
  3. why using so many variables and a loop when you can do it all with 2 'piped' commandsthis doesn't work - at least not on Solaris.
