Thanks a million.

Looks like its sorted now cp referenced a wrong directory, any ideas how it could changed and how to stop this from happening again?

I'm afraid I do not understand you. Could you please explain what has happened in more detail?

In one of our data directories a cp file was created with nothing in it. If you ran the cp command unix would then reference the command to the wrong cp file. So it looks like when you ran cp the empty file would be called.

The output will be a little more explanatary:

Code:
/bmunix/data/branch00/iam>ls cp
cp
/bmunix/data/branch00/iam>cd ..
/bmunix/data/branch00>cd spool
/bmunix/data/branch00/spool
/bmunix/data/branch00/spool>rm solstc.dat
/bmunix/data/branch00/spool>cp lst01d.dat solstc.dat
/bmunix/data/branch00/spool>ls solstc.dat
solstc.dat: No such file or directory
/bmunix/data/branch00/spool>alias
autoload='typeset -fu'
command='command '
cp=/bmunix/data/branch00/iam/cp
functions='typeset -f'
history='fc -l'
integer='typeset -i'
local=typeset
ls=/usr/bin/ls
nohup='nohup '
r='fc -e -'
rm=/usr/bin/rm
stop='kill -STOP'
suspend='kill -STOP $$'
/bmunix/data/branch00/spool>

Now I understand. Smilie
You have, at least, two options:
- Edit your cp (/bmunix/data/branch00/iam/cp) and fix it so that it works properly.
- Edit your profile and remove that alias and, perhaps, modify your PATH variable.

I've actually removed the file from that directory so that as it is not needed.
