UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi,

I have a script to which i can pass n number of parameters.

Example unix_script.sh abc.txt pqr.txt

I want to check if the the files have any records or not .

I want to do this using a for loop

file_count=$#

for x in filecount loop
echo $x
x = x +1
end loop

I dont know how to write this above piece of code in unix.
Please let me know if there is a better way to do the above thing.

I'm not quite sure what you're looking for but you could use something like

Code:

find . -size 0c -type f -name *.txt

to recursively find all files which have a size of 0 (and therefore no records).

If you still want to use a for loop, try something like this

FILES="$@";

for f in $FILES; do
  if [ ! -s $f ]; then
     echo $f;
  fi
done

what gives you a list a all the files you passed to the script which have a size of 0 (and therefore no records).

What i am really looking for is to write a ftp script which would accept the following parameters
Server
Userid
LocalFilePath
RemoteFilePath
FTPType - whether binary or ascii
FileChecker - if set to "Y" and if the file is empty do not FTP the file
if set to "N" , ftp the file even if the file is empty
FileName1
FileName2
FileName3
.
.
.

This is how i plan to do
shift 6
File_count = "$#" total count of files to be FTP'ed
File_list = "$@" total files that may be FTP'ed

If FileChecker is set to "Y" run a loop to ignore the files which are empty and thus prepare a new file list

So if i pass 3 files as parameter abc.txt , pqr.txt and xyz.txt and assuming pqr.txt is an empty file and the file_checker is set to "Y"
File_list would be abc.txt pqr.txt xyz.txt
New_File_List would be abc.txt xyz.txt

I would then use this new_file_list , open an ftp connection and transfer all the files using mput.

I am not good at unix commands.
Please let me know if there is a better, much simpler way to do the above piece of code.

There's a possibility to transfer files by using scp and private-/public keys for authenticating users, which is one of the best ways to accomplish tasks like this imho. The script would look quite similiar to the ftp'ed version, so it doesnt really matter and its not even more difficult.

Since it would take quite a while to write the entire script for you, please try to write one on your own and get back to us with some more specific questions if you need help.
