How to find authentication log

I had setup a test machine fedora core 4,on my lan. When i log in as root. I get a message saying i have mail. I checked the mail it shows me all the logs and login attempts..Its a neat feature.I wanna know how is this feature activated.And i want to know where are the authentication logs stored so that i can keep checking them manually.

Hi, you can go into /var/log folder, "auth.log" and "messages" would be helpful files to read.
