string_name = data1 data2 data3 ....
Is this stored in a file?

string1 = data1
string2 = data2
string3 = data3
Do you want all this in another file?

No, both these are stored in variables

Post some sample of data1 data2 data3, we need to know selection criteria which distincts one data from other.

Here is the data variable which I need to split. Each data item is spaced by a blank space.

echo $file_data

See this example. Note the usage of "$TEST" against $TEST and their respective behaviours.

Code:
[/tmp]$ cat try.sh
#! /bin/sh

TEST="a b c"
set -- $TEST
echo $1
echo $2
echo $3

set -- "$TEST"
echo $1
[/tmp]$ ./try.sh
a
b
c
a b c
[/tmp]$
