Question no screen output
I'm a newbie.
I'm having a problem at work with a script. What i'm trying to do is connect to a cisco switch from a sun station. After i run the script and telnet into the switch i don't get any output on the "xterm window" and all my commands from the script don't show up on the screen or on the saved file. If i hit the return on the keyboard those carriage returns show up in the file saved. It's also a pain to get out of the telnet session. Smilie Are my commands not showing up because i'm leaving the sun station and the script connection is lost?
Here's my script:

#!/bin/ksh
telnet $switch_ip $port >saved_file
pause 2 or sleep 2 <---- i don't remember.

#I've typed these below and nothing shows up when the file is saved.
type "type\n"
send "send\n"
sende "sende\n"
print "print\n"
echo "echo\n"

Is it possible to split the screen and show, lets say a local directory listing on the left and a remote directory listing on the right with shell scripting? Suppressing output to the screen

I want to check whether the variable read from the console is number or character , so i used echo $option|grep and checked the reuslt returned by grep cmd using $? Is there a way to turn off standard output while processing is going on? I have tried redirecting to /dev/null but that is not working because some of the commands invoke a profile. I need to suppress the output to the screen. I am appending to a file so do not need the output on the screen in the CLI environment. eg. cat $HOME/somefile >> $HOME/anotherfile I am doing this a number of times with SQL output files so I can look at the finished file not on the screen in the... NAME

       vdetelweb - Virtual Distributed Ethernet Telnet and/or Web management module

SYNOPSIS

       vdetelweb [ --web ] [ --telnet ] [ --nodename nodename ] [ --daemon ] [ --rcfile rcfile ] mgmt_socket

DESCRIPTION

       vdetelweb implements a tiny telnet server and/or a tiny web server for the remote management of a VDE2 switch.

OPTIONS

       -w, --web
	      start the web server. At least one of --web or --telnet must be set.

       -t, --telnet
	      start the telnet server. At least one of --web or --telnet must be set.

       -n, --nodename nodename
	      specify  the  nodename as seen from remote connections (e.g. in the command prompt or in the web page title). uname nodename is used
	      when this option is not specified.

       -d, --daemon
	      run as a daemon, using syslog for logging.

       -f, --rcfile rcfile
	      rc file to set the initial switch configuration.	When not specified, vdetelweb searches for ~/.vde/vdetelwebrc and /etc/vde/vdetel-
	      webrc. At leas one rc file must exist and be readable.

       -h, --help
	      print help. please use it for a more complete list of options.

       mgmt_socket
	      is  the  managemnt  socket  used to communicate with the vde_switch.  (This option must match the path used in the -M option for the
	      vde_switch).

NOTICE

       Virtual Distributed Ethernet is not related in any way with www.vde.com ("Verband der Elektrotechnik, Elektronik  und  Informationstechnik"
       i.e. the German "Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies").
