Root in all but name...
That's basically what I need to be. The software I'm trying to install will not allow the installer to be the root user. I've tried making my own account a member of the root group, but that does nothing.

I'm using SunOS 5.9.

Why not just install as a normal user, since that appear to be what you need to do?

Because when I do that, it tells me I don't have the proper permissions. I've given full read-write access to this folder and it still won't let me proceed with the installation.

What is the software? That's really strange. You can add a user to the /etc/passwd file with uid value of 0. ( I'm not 100% sure if this will work for Sun or not. I've never used SunOS. ) But I would be really suspicous of software that is trying to install to system directories, but doesn't allow you to install as 'root'.

It's Oracle Database 9i. I'm installing it in the folder /opt/oraInventory, I think, I'd have to go back to the office and see.

I'll try changing the uid. Are you sure it won't cause a problem, not being unique?

Oracle should not be installed as root. Follow the instructions in the Oracle Installation manual. I have seen DBA's install Oracle on Solaris many times without being root. They did need to ask me to run a script as root during the process.

Yes. I've always seen oracle installed by user "oracle" whose primary group is "dba". There is a script called "root.sh" that must be run by root at a point near the end of the install, but the rest is done as oracle.

Can you gain root privileges if the suid program does not belong to root?

I had a question in my test which asked where suppose user B has a program with 's' bit set. Can user A run this program and gain root privileges in any way? I suppose not as the suid program run with privileges of owner and this program will run with B's privileges and not root. (1 Reply)
