Error Well, im getting it, but i have ONE question
Hay everyone, i would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who helped me make the decision to get a linux distro. As a newbie, Im defininately considering buying Mandrake Linux... I went to the site and phew..... 2300 applications, i think ill have a good time. But i do have a question, If i decide to dual boot and everything, how will i use the internet, i know there is netscape, etc. but what about my modem, i have a winmodem and i heard that you canot use a winmodem with linux....well please get back to me soon and thank you in advance.

ohh and also
Ummmm... which version would someone suggest for me.... I mean i have enough $$ to buy the Mandrake suite version...but id rather not spend that mcuh.. iwas thinkin more like around 50-80, i know power pack is around 70-80 depending..... ok so could someonesuggest something, id like to have a media player, a nice word processor and some games, desktop themes etc... ohh and does mandrake have a program that partitions hard drives alos? because i dont want to mess anything up!!!!

Linux version
Mandrake offers a version that you can buy for around $30 at any bookstore, Barnes and Noble or Borders Books.

This is the Linux Mandrake store online. I think that the 8.1 release will give you 2 free CDs with a pre-release order.

Error ok which is that
Ok ill think about that.... but is that the standard version or the pwerpack...because i like what the site said about power pack, there is 7 cds and phew it looks yummy.

First of all. With the 7 cd's only 2 of them are the O/S itself. The rest is usually doc's and programs for the O/S. Lots of which you wouldn't use especially if you new to linux you wouldn't.

As Kelam Magus said you can get a copy from a book store. Most comman is Redhat that comes with it. But there are other versions. That way you also get a book :-)

Though if your only new to Linux I wouldn't go and spend a heap of money on it. What if you don't like it? You would like itbut what if you don't or want to change the distro? So go with the cheap option until you get a distro you like and want to use 100% of your time :-)

Yeah, you most likely won't be able to use your Winmodem.

The word processor, media player, desktop themes (and window managers!), and countless others should be included with the installation disks. Plus, you can always download other if you have certain preferrences (like Sun's Star Office).

It will come with everything you need to partition/install/dual-boot, but since a partition change will generally render the current data on the disk unusable, you should backup, then install each OS, then restore your previous file/settings to the other OS.
A good alternative to this would be to buy another hard drive... you don't have to worry about backing up/restoring the other operating system.

And in my own humble opinion, you should test your new system by playing xbill! (Yeah, yeah - cliche I know, but fun!)
